Brake System

Your car's brake system is the most critical safety system and you should check it regularly. Learn to listen to your brakes; squeaking and grinding are signs of problems.  Learn how your brakes feel; low pedal, pulsating, pulling when applying brakes, or just when you suspect any problems.  A properly operating brake system help ensure safe and proper vehicle control under a wide variety of conditions.

Brake System flow chart

When you push on the brake pedal, the force generate hydraulic pressure in the master cylinder.  This pressure flows through the hydraulic lines and hoses to the wheel cylinders and calipers, forcing the shoes against the drum (drum brakes) and the pads against the rotor (disc brakes)  The resulting friction slows the vehicle

Brakes are a normal wear item for any car and eventually they are going to need replacement. Avoid letting your brakes get to the "metal to metal" point, which will result expensive rotor or drum replacement.
